La Bohème - Patrick Bouju & Justine Loiseau
Auvergne, FRANCE
Auvergne, FRANCE
Patrick Bouju's path to natural wine started with irony: a chemical engineer who discovered he was sulfite intolerant. Instead of avoiding wine, this revelation became his calling. During military service in the mid-90s, he tasted his first natural wines and everything clicked. After studying oenology in Beaune, he made his first vintage in 2002 while working IT. By 2008, the vines won – he left his corporate job to make wine full-time.
Today, alongside partner Justine Loiseau, Patrick has become one of France's most influential natural wine pioneers. Their 9-hectare organic vineyards sprawl across the volcanic terroirs of Puy-de-Dôme near Saint-Georges-sur-Allier, where they work old vines with a horse. They cultivate everything from classic Gamay to rare indigenous varieties like Mirefleurien and Pineau d'Aunis, selecting scattered parcels for quality over convenience.
Beyond their estate wines, Patrick and Justine create an impressive négoce line, sourcing organic grapes from trusted natural winemaker friends across France.
In the cellar: radical purity.
Zero sulfites added and wild yeast fermentation for maximum expression.
Their diverse natural wine catalog includes everything from the famous Action Bronson collaboration "A La Natural" to mythical cuvées that biodynamic wine lovers chase across continents.
Patrick and Justine's sulfite-free wines are complex, generous, and utterly alive.
These aren't just natural wines – they're vins vivants in the truest sense.
