Inside AUGUSTA: Italy's Natural Wine Fair Experience
Ever feel like you've lost the plot?
Between shipping policies, inventory mistakes, algorithms changing every two weeks... Sometimes I catch myself thinking: "Wait, where's the wine? Wasn't that the point?"
Then we go to a natural wine fair and come back more fired up than ever.
...even when the hotel literally catches fire at 5 AM the night before the fair!
Exactly—it was early November and we were in Turin for one of the biggest natural wine events of the year... and at 5 AM we were freezing outside the hotel, waiting for the firefighters to finish their job after being evacuated :)
I'll spare you the selfie of me and Oana half-asleep commenting on the other guests' pajamas.

Inside AUGUSTA: Why this Italian Natural Wine Fair Keeps the Movement Alive
A few hours after the fire evacuation, we were walking into AUGUSTA - one of Italy's most renowned natural wine fairs - among other wine enthusiasts and some of the best winemakers on Earth.
Look, the market isn't exactly thriving: tariffs rising, consumption dropping, producers struggling to pay their bills.
Yet THE ENERGY WAS PURE CELEBRATION!
Hugs, laughter, toasts. Producers pouring their hearts out about their wines, leaving all the worries at the door.
...it reminded us why we fell in love with this movement in the first place.
Because the essence of natural wine was never about the business model. It's about life.
What Makes Natural Wine Fairs Different
"So what's so special about these wine fairs anyway?"
Good question. Walk into any conventional wine trade show and you'll see corporate booths, price negotiations, buyers calculating margins. It's commerce, pure and simple.
Walk into AUGUSTA or any major natural wine fair, and it's a completely different atmosphere.
Yes, business happens. But that's not the point. The point is community.
These aren't competitors sizing each other up - they're producers who share philosophy, values, and often struggle together against an industry that tells them they're doing everything wrong.
When you walk through AUGUSTA, you're not just tasting wine - you're connecting with people who've chosen a harder path because they believe in something. Zero shortcuts. Zero compromises. Just grapes, time, and conviction.

The Spirit That Keeps Natural Wine Alive
Here's what struck us most at AUGUSTA: despite every economic challenge facing wine producers right now, the energy was electric.
Why?
Because natural wine was never about maximizing profit margins or building wine empires. It's about making wine the way humans have made it for thousands of years before industrial agriculture convinced us we needed 50 different additives.
It's about respecting terroir, accepting vintage variation, embracing the unpredictable beauty of wild fermentation.
The producers we meet at natural wine fairs aren't there to pitch products - they're there because they can't imagine making wine any other way.
And that's exactly the spirit we look for when choosing which producers to work with at Wyrd Wine.
Discovery at AUGUSTA: Vigna Flor
Among all the wines we tasted at AUGUSTA, Vigna Flor stopped us in our tracks.
Davide and Francesca left their careers as sommeliers and wine shop owners to make wine on the Euganian Hills in Veneto. Not exactly a conventional career move, but that's precisely the kind of decision that leads to exceptional natural wine.

What Makes Vigna Flor Stand Out
- Zero added sulfites. Not "low sulfite." Zero. This is as pure as natural winemaking gets.
- Spontaneous fermentation. Indigenous yeasts from the vineyard do the work - no commercial yeast additions to control the process.
- Synergistic agriculture. Beyond organic certifications, they work with the vineyard as a living ecosystem.
- Entirely manual work. Every step from vineyard to bottle is done by hand.
The Euganian Hills (Colli Euganei) aren't as famous as Tuscany or Piedmont, but this volcanic terroir in Veneto produces wines with distinctive minerality and aromatic precision.
The Wines: Clarity and Drinkability
What impressed us most? The aromatic clarity in their orange wines.
Skin-contact whites can sometimes taste muddy or over-extracted, especially with zero added sulfites. Not these.
Their orange wines showed aromatic precision you rarely find in this category. The reds delivered pure terroir expression - balanced, drinkable, honest.
Davide and Francesca dedicated this project to their daughter, Flor. You can taste that care in every bottle. These aren't wines made to impress critics or chase trends. They're wines made with love, attention, and uncompromising standards.
At €20-23 per bottle, they represent exceptional value for zero-sulfite Italian natural wine from producers working at this level of quality.
Canlibero Returns
Seeing our friend Ennio at AUGUSTA meant one thing: we were bringing back a full load of Canlibero wines.
For those discovering Canlibero for the first time: this is one of Italy's most sought-after natural winemakers, based in Benevento, Campania. His wines consistently rank among our bestsellers.
What Makes Canlibero Special
- Zero added sulfites (0/0) - Complete commitment to natural winemaking
- Campania terroir - Southern Italian character with volcanic influence
- Zero compromises - No filtration, no fining, no additions of any kind
Campania's natural wine scene has exploded in recent years (Cantina Giardino, Tenuta Vincenzo Nardone), and producers like Canlibero are a big reason why. The Sannio (that's the name of the subregion where the winery is located) soil, indigenous grape varieties, and winemaking tradition create perfect conditions for zero-intervention wines with character and aging potential.
When Canlibero sells out (which happens regularly), we hear about it. Now the full range is back in stock.

Why These Fairs Matter More Than Ever
"OK, but why do natural wine fairs actually matter?"
Natural wine fairs like AUGUSTA are essential for reasons that go beyond commerce:
Connection Over Commerce
Yes, wine fairs are business events. But at natural wine fairs, the relationships matter more than the transactions. Producers know each other, support each other, pour for each other. This isn't competition - it's community.
Discovery Without Gatekeepers
Natural wine fairs give small producers direct access to importers, shop owners, and wine enthusiasts. No need for massive marketing budgets or distributor relationships. Just great wine and genuine conversation.
Keeping Standards High
When you're pouring next to some of the best natural winemakers in Europe, you can't fake it. The community self-regulates through shared values and mutual respect.
Proof That Another Way Is Possible
In an industry dominated by industrial production, chemical additives, and marketing over substance, natural wine fairs show that authenticity still matters.
People still care about how wine is made, who makes it, and what it represents.
What We Bring Back From Wine Fairs
Every time we attend events like AUGUSTA, we return with more than just wine.
We bring back renewed conviction that our approach matters. That sourcing directly from small producers, refusing to compromise on wine quality, and building genuine relationships with winemakers isn't just idealistic - it's the only way forward that makes sense.
We bring back stories. Like Davide and Francesca leaving stable careers to make wine by hand on volcanic hills. Like Ennio continuing to make zero-sulfite wines in Campania while others take shortcuts.
And yes, we bring back exceptional wine. Bottles that tell honest stories. Bottles made by people who chose the harder path because they believe in something.
That hotel fire at 5 AM could have derailed the whole trip. Instead, it became part of the story - a reminder that even when things don't go as planned, showing up for what matters is worth it.
How To Experience These Wines
Both Vigna Flor and Canlibero are now available in our shop. These aren't wines you'll find in supermarkets or conventional wine stores. They represent the best of Italy's natural wine movement - uncompromising quality, zero additions, maximum character.
For those in Germany and across Europe, we ship directly from our warehouse.
The natural wine movement isn't about exclusivity or gatekeeping. It's about reconnecting with wine as something honest, alive, and worth celebrating - even when the world throws hotel fires and economic challenges your way.
That's what we found at AUGUSTA. That's what keeps us going. And that's what we hope you'll taste in every bottle.
